Once Sertrous is resurrected, he’s a terrible sight to behold. Furious at this, the gods punished Avermin for unwittingly spreading this heresy, taking his rank, his status, and his beauty, driving the Solar to a petty madness that resulted in him stealing Sertrous’ severed head back from the gods and absconding it, convinced that the Prince of Heretics held the truths of the gods. Unfortunately, they listened, and it quickly became known that a mortal could gain access to divine power as a Cleric, Paladin, or otherwise simply by worshiping the sea, or fire, or war, or love, or even themselves. In the end, the two armies slaughtered one another until only the Demon Prince and the Solar were left, and just before Avamerin delivered the final blow, Sertrous asked him “Why do the people serve your foolish gods when they could gain the same power through their own will?” Scoffing, Avermin took the serpent’s head from his shoulders and brought it to the city he had been besieging as proof of his demise.įinding the demon’s final words to be hysterical, he mockingly repeated them to the people.

They sent down the Solar known as Avamerin, one of their most powerful angels, and a host of angels with him to combat Sertrous and his army of mortals and twisted minions. Figuring that he could take back his throne with an army of mortals at his beck and call, he set to conquering the surrounding countryside to slaughter the weak and break the strong. The fragments of his spirit managed to cling to a snake they found slithering through a bog, and over the next few centuries, Sertrous regained his power and dramatically reshaped the form of his host. who got booted out of his Abyssal throne by the first of the true demons and had his soul essentially smeared across reality. Sertrous was once an Obyrinth, a primordial demon and the D&D equivalent to the Qlippoth. The difference, however, is that “snakelike monsters” covers a very wide variety of encounters, and thus the DM is encouraged to tailor each battle to feature a different combination of beasts, first starting at EL (Encounter Level similar to CR, but focused more around consuming resources from the players) below what the party can handle, then on even grounds, and then two levels above the party. Much like Kyuss, the previous Evil, the serpent encounters have a chance of happening each week, then once a day, then once every 1d4 hours, and then finally once an hour when Sertrous is resurrected. Venomous, aggressive snakes grow like grass from soil and stone and serpentine monsters such as nagas, hydras, and demonic mariliths spring into existence from nowhere, serving an unseen master. But as sacrifices to Sertrous become more and more common, things take a turn for the vile. At first, they are merely harmless snakes, though they cause quite the ruckus as they emerge in massive numbers and set to doing as snakes do, eating, slithering, crawling about, and generally being something of a nuisance.
